Bird Flu also known as Avian influenza is an infection caused by avian (bird) influenza (flu) A viruses. This influenza A viruses occur naturally among birds. Wild birds worldwide get flu A infections in their intestines, but usually do not get sick from flu infections. However, avian influenza is very contagious among birds and some of these viruses can make certain domesticated bird species, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, very sick and kill them.
Infected birds can shed influenza virus in their saliva, nasal secretions, and faeces. Domesticated birds may become infected with avian influenza virus through direct contact with infected waterfowl or other infected poultry, or through contact with surfaces (such as dirt or cages) or materials (such as water or feed) that have been contaminated with the virus.
However, the highly pathogenic form spreads more rapidly through flocks of poultry. This form may cause disease that affects multiple internal organs and has a mortality rate that can reach 90-100 percent often within 48 hours.
Medium of transfer
Most cases of avian influenza infection in humans have resulted from contact with infected poultry or surfaces contaminated with secretion/excretions from infected birds. The faeces of the Aves are considered the most dangerous medium of transfer.
Symptoms
The general symptoms of the disease are fever more than 100.4 F, cough, sore throat, muscle aches and difficulty in breathing. “However, during the winter, such symptoms are common. So, when one experiences difficulty in breathing and shows other symptoms, one has to go see a doctor,” Dr Subedi said, adding that people suffering from chronic diseases have to be immediately referred to the hospital if they develop the symptoms. Experts recommend that persons diagnosed with avian flu be put in isolation, fed liquids and observe complete rest.
